A Washington man who jumped from the eleventh floor of a cruise ship that was docked in the Bahamas into the ocean below, has been banned for life by Royal Caribbean cruise lines.
FOX 13 in a report on the incident Wednesday, identified the man as Nick Naydev.
In a video that went viral on social media, Naydev’s friends gather around as he climbs up the railing of the balcony of Symphony of the Seas.
He looks at his friend who is holding the camera and then leaps, according to FOX.
He is quoted as having said later that his idea was that the stunt would provide a good laugh for his friends and he would swim back to shore to continue his vacation.
However Naydev explained that he was booted off the ship by security officials.
“I am truly astonished at how this video has spread throughout the internet. I did not think this through before I jumped. My idea was this would be a good laugh for my friends and I would just swim back to shore and continue my vacation and never thought this would be this serious,” Naydev is quoted as saying in a statement to FOX 13.
He later wrote on his Instagram account: “My feet were actually fine. It was my neck and tailbone that hurt.”
“Could barely walk for 3 days and could barely sleep from the pain. I’m good now.”
Yahoo Lifestyle said representatives from Royal Caribbean Cruises called the incident “stupid.”
“This was stupid and reckless behavior, and he and his companions have been banned from ever sailing with us again,” a spokesperson told the website. “We are exploring legal action.”
The video of Naydev jumping from the cruise ship attracted more than 80,000 views and some very caustic comments.
“I have to admit I was hoping you died. You prob will soon though. You are extra dumb,” one person wrote.
“Play stupid games, win stupid prizes,” wrote another.
“What would they have done if he died – not cool at all they all are fools,” was another comment, while one observer simply wrote: “Only white people.”
