Royals Touring The Caribbean Urged To Avoid ‘Phoney Sanctimony’ Over Slavery

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie arrived in Saint Lucia Friday at the start of a seven-day tour of the Caribbean, against the backdrop of a letter critical of the Royal family for past comments on Slavery.

The open letter from the Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission urged the Earl and Countess of Wessex to avoid ‘phoney sanctimony’ over Slavery.

The strongly-worded message to the British royal family renewed calls for an apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade.

“It has become common for members of the royal family and representatives of the government of Britain to come to this region and lament that slavery was an ‘appalling atrocity’, that it was ‘abhorrent’, that ‘it should not have happened’,” the letter stated.

“We have heard such from your former Prime Minister David Cameron and most recently from your brother, the Prince of Wales, and your nephew, Prince William, but such sentiments did not convey new knowledge to us,” the document stated.

“African people and their descendants – as most of us are – have known such since the middle of the 16th century. We have been on the receiving end of the barbarity. We hear the phony sanctimony of those who came before you that these crimes are a ‘stain on your history’,” the letter asserted.

And it appealed to the visiting Royals not to repeat such a mantra.

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie are the latest royals to tour the Caribbean as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee celebrations.

Last month’s visit to the region by Prince William and his wife Kate brought protests demanding restorative justice.

The Saint Lucia National Reparations Committee (NRC), in a statement before the visit here by the Earl and Countess of Wessex, welcomed the opportunity to continue its Reparations advocacy during and after the visit, through related public education actions.

“The CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC), of which the NRC is a member, holds that the Royal Family and Britain owe every former West Indian colony “A Full and Formal Apology” for their roles in Slavery,” the NRC asserted.

In addition, the Saint Lucia organisation observed that Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders insist that expressions of royal sorrow and regret do not represent the equal will to repair that comes with an apology.

  1. AA St Lucia Times, previously y’all had a pic of PJP standing between the Royals smiling away…Why did you change it? 😂

  2. All the racism against against black people from the past until this day in the world’s history must stop. Black people must be compensated for the suffering they and their children have gone through by the Arabs and the White Europeans from all their countries. Racism and slavery is still in our society today against black people all over the world. Black are being treated badly and no one other than the black nations are doing something about it and calls for reparation for the suffering of their people from all over the world. It is important to listen to the ply of black people. The God of Justice and righteousness is watching and waiting for the ply of His People. Let the world who cause all the injustice repent and respond to the ply of the black innocent blood they have shed and touchered all over the world. Pay your dues and stop your wickedness against Black people all over the world, for thats where all nations of the world are coming from. Black people are your mothers and fathers without them you would have never been in this world. Doing things to destroy them you will be destroying your own selves.

  3. BLACK PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD AND THEIR CHILDREN MUST BE COMPENSATED FOR ALL THE ATROCITIES WHICH HAS BEEN COMMITTED AGAINST THEM AND THEIR CHILDREN BY THE ARABS AND ALL THE NATIONS OF THE WHITE WESTERN WORLD UNTIL THIS DAY AND ARE STILL PERSECUTED WITH RACISM AND SLAVERY TODAY. THE GOD OF JUSTICE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS IS WATCHING WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS WORLD AGAINST HIS PEOPLE. GREAT PUNISHMENT WILL FALL FROM THE GOD ALMIGHTY AGAINST THESE NATIONS WHO FAIL TO PAY REPARATION FOR THEIR ATROCITY AGAINST THE BLACK WORLD AND THEIR CHILDREN WHICH ARE GOD ALMIGHTY’S PEOPLE. FOR HE IS A GOD OF JUSTICE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS. BE WARNED.

  4. I don’t Support no King .Queen .Prince or Princess From Bambooklàat England. They did too much To the Black people.Just as Christopher Columbus who Never Discovered No Islands the Thief

  5. All this bullshit about slavery. How about the Romans when they conquered Britain all those centuries ago they made slaves of the British if you look back even further the Egyptians made slaves of the people they had beaten in battle. Slavery is not a new thing it has been going on since man first took breath so why keep blaming the British. What about the French, Dutch who had an equal part in the slave trade. Even now there are incidents of slaves being taken from Africa and sold to other nations UK does not now do this. So give us a break and just be happy to be alive and enjo life as it is.

  6. @Economic Times:- I concur; during the failed ‘West Indian Federation’ there was much disunity about the subject. Norman Manley was in favour but Bustamante made sure he was not about to share with the others. George Odlam a few Lucian students and myself agonized listening to Eric Williams singing the praises of Trinidad ad nauseam, the only one who was sympathetic was Sir Grantly Adams.
If anyone think there’s a Penny to be had – think again – you will huff & puff you getting nada. Too many mouths in the U.S. making noise, I personally would be happy for all, but sorry aint expecting anything to happen.

@ Just Saying:- where did you get this sheeet from? during the time of the Slave trade, the Jews were no longer a nation, they were dispersed and enslaved themselves and continually persecuted, even now. During the middle ages Jews were told to chose Cristianity or you know what.(are you anti Jew?) don’t say these things, if you have proof, show us. Let us not be a people of hate: A certain Jew said “One commandment I give you, love one another” He is the one who died for you and for us all.

    • Ohhh,
Could you provide some evidence or information that would lead persons to read about this themselves. This is the first time I have ever come across this.
      Please elaborate with evidence.

      • The beast, if you really wanted to know, you would do some Google searches of your own I’m not here to spoon feed you, I ain’t your mama boy. Your masters then ” the Jew” is still your master today. They have justed integrated into white communities and refer to them selves as being white, but they are far from it. The subversive Jew rat is an expert at hiding it’s self and diverting blame.
Criticise a Jew and be labelled “antisemitic”.

  7. In my opinion there should be no financial compensation for slavery. Why ? Because that will create a domestic slave trade. The money will not filter down to the vulnerable population. Politics is a very good example.

  8. Did Africans captured Africans? Is there any semblance of unity among African descendents ? Is slavery still evident among African descendents?
