Saint Lucia Confirms Three Cases Of The Delta Variant

Saint Lucia’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sharon Belmar-George, has confirmed the presence here of three cases of the Delta Variant among six new cases of Variants of Concern – the others being the Alpha Variant.

Belmar-George made the disclosure at a press briefing Friday morning during which she said Saint Lucia had received  the last batch of results from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

“We have noted three new Delta cases in country. These are the first Delta Variant cases that we have recorded in country,” she disclosed.

And she said the three Delta Variants two are US nationals and one is a Saint Lucian national – females between the ages of 18 and 37. Two were in the South of the Island and one in the North.

Only one was vaccinated, Belmar-George stated.

The disclosure in relation to the presence here of the Delta Variant came amid a sharp surge in cases of COVID-19 in Saint Lucia.

Health officials say that in the last 28 days, Saint Lucia recorded 640 cases of the the virus.

The Chief Medical Officer asserted that Saint Lucia is at a critical point.

“We cannot allow our system to be overwhelmed,” Belmar-George observed.
