Saint Lucia has congratulated United States President-elect, Joe Biden, and his running mate, Kamala Harris, on their victory in the presidential elections.

Prime Minister Allen Chastanet offered congratulations to both on behalf of the government and people of this country.

Writing on his official Facebook page Saturday, Chastanet disclosed that along with Saint Lucians and the rest of the world, he has been watching the elections in the United States.

“The results indicate that the American people have decided that Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris will be their leaders. On behalf of the Government and People of Saint Lucia I congratulate the President-elect and Vice President-elect,” the PM stated.

He said the United States has long been a friend to Saint Lucia.

“We very much look forward to that relationship continuing. Initiatives important to our mutual interests include economic prosperity, climate change and security,” Chastanet observed.

The victory of the Biden-Harris ticket in the US presidential election was greeted by spontaneous celebration in some communities in the USA.

But media reports indicate that the Donald Trump campaign has indicated their candidate does not plan to concede.

The campaign for the presidency has been a contentious and bitter one that created deep divisions across the United States.

President-elect Biden has said it is now time for America to “unite and heal”.

“With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation,” he said.

Record turnout in the face of “unprecedented obstacles”, he said, showed democracy “beats deep in the heart of America”.
