Saint Lucia Experiences Total Electrical System Shutdown

Castries, September 4, 2019 – The island experienced a total electrical system shutdown at approximately 12:37 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4.

The power outage was caused by a major internal fault at the Cul De Sac power station.  The fault tripped all of the generators, resulting in a total System shutdown.

After the faulted zone was isolated, appropriate checks and inspections commenced, and the process of restoring the system was initiated.  Power restoration started around 2:25 a.m. and was completed at 3:20 a.m.

LUCELEC is continuing to investigate the cause of the problem and to take necessary corrective action.

LUCELEC apologises to its customers for this unplanned outage and for the inconvenience caused.

  1. After my fan stopped working i was unable to sleep until power was restored at around 2:30 am. There have been really hot and humid nights lately. No complex system like a national power-grid has 100% up-time so i can accept a failure or two. Just try not to make it a habit

  2. As an Electrical Engineer I can tell you that leaving a fan on while one sleeps is a very dangerous practice. If that fan stops spinning with the electricity still flowing through it, the fan will catch a fire. Make sure your house has rcd protection and change the 13 amp fuse in the plug of the fan to a 3 amp fuse

    • Lou can I publish this . This is great infor that we need

    • I hope the Bureau of Standards has read your post! If it is such a fire hazard, why is it being done on the manufacturers end in the first place? Secondly why are they being sold here?

Thanks again for your advice- I may or may not take it up!

    • Wow. I will do some further research on this. However if so, this is one of the best comment ever written on this platform. Sorry but I think people like you have responsibility to find a way to educate the nation further. These information can literally save lives.

  6. Things happen just be happy it was fix for the morning and it was not the whole day. Really things happen that we have no control of even when we do our very best, in all fairness I don’t think someone would deliberately do something like that. Life is way too short to worry about something like that. I’m just saying thank God it was in the wee hours of the morning and it was able to be back on in a few hours thank God that’s all I’m saying.

  7. Why don’t LUCELEC give everyone a credit on their AC of some sort for the dis-comfort, they, LUCELEC, caused the island last night. It was LUCELEC’s power failures fault – “…caused by a major internal fault at the Cul De Sac power station.” Don’t they have an immediate back up (B,C, or D) for instances such as this one? Thus, a credit of some sort is perfectly in order from LUCELEC!! TOO quick to disconnect!!
