Saint Lucia is monitoring Saint Vincent’s La Soufriere volcano, where the alert level has been raised to orange amid increased activity.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves Tuesday urged residents in communities near the volcano to be on the alert.
“At relatively short notice, you may get – may get an order to evacuate if in fact we get the scientific information that an explosive eruption will be occurring or at least the likelihood,” Gonsalves told his countrymen.
But he made clear that an evacuation order had not been given.
Saint Lucia’s National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) said in a statement Tuesday that it has knowledge of and is monitoring the activity at the La Soufriere Volcano, Saint Vincent, based on dialogue with the UWI Seismic Research Centre, Trinidad and Tobago.
“As the situation unfolds NEMO will provide updates and advisories to the public,” the NEMO statement said.
