Saint Lucia On Airlines COVID-19 Pre-testing Crusade

Saint Lucia is currently on a ‘huge crusade’ to convince airlines to adopt COVID-19 pre-testing as a prerequisite for persons wishing to travel, Prime Minister Allen Chastanet says.

Chastanet spoke during an interview with SKY News.

“We have certainly not seen the return to travel that we would like to,” he explained.

The PM recalled serving as Vice President of Marketing and sales for Air Jamaica during the events of 9/11.

“It would be difficult to think that persons would have travelled if in fact the stringent security processes that followed 9/11 had not been implemented,” he told SKY News.

Chastanet expressed the view that it would not be economically viable for airlines to keep their middle aisles free in a bid to implement COVID-19 physical distancing.

“It helps in a big way if persons are going on a flight – you know that everybody has been pre-tested and we have seen that protocol has worked very well,” he observed.

Chastanet told SKY News that Saint Lucia has the lowest COVID-19 rate per capita in the region and has recorded no deaths.

“We have worked very hard to achieve that,” he declared, adding that pre-testing is a very critical component for persons visiting Saint Lucia.

Chastanet said since welcoming visitors back on July 9, 2020, over 5000 tourists have come here, mainly from the United States of America and the UK.

He disclosed that Saint Lucia is currently in the process of opening up to allow tourists currently restricted to being on property and going on some sea tours, to experience land tours as well in September.

“In October, we  are looking to have more hotels open –  in fact British Airways  will be starting a daily service to Saint Lucia in October,” the former Tourism Minister stated.

He said that currently, about one-third of hotels on the Island are open but it is hoped that some two-thirds will open in October.
