Saint Lucian Magistrate In BVI Threatens to Jail Attorneys, Police

Saint Lucia-born Shawn Innocent, who is currently serving a Magistrate in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), has threatened to imprison members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and Attorneys from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), according to local news reports.

Innocent reportedly made the threat this week over the discovery that a written statement without a signature was presented as evidence in a court case.

“I am seeing a number of these documents coming to the court and none of them is witnessed or signed,” Innocent was quoted as saying.

It was reported that in another case a police officer informed the court that a prosecutor asked him to sign for a defendant.

Shawn Innocent was appointed as a full-time Magistrate in the BVI for a period of six months, effective from September 3, 2018.

His specialties are in the areas of Criminal Law and Civil Litigation (High Court and Appellate Jurisdiction), Corporate Law and General Legal Practice.
