The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services has issued a Saharan dust caution.

It has advised people with respiratory conditions and dust allergies to take the necessary precautions due to poor air quality.

The agency gave the advice in its 6.00 pm weather report on Saturday.

It said that ‘a plume of thick Saharan dust’ is expected to cause a reduction in visibility and air quality over the region from Sunday.

Medical experts warn that once inhaled, the dust can irritate airways and cause respiratory issues.

They say people who already suffer from an underlying airway or bronchial disease, such as asthma or COPD, are especially at risk.
