Saint Mary’s College pays homage to Sir Derek Walcott

In a spirited ceremony, Saint Mary’s College paid homage to Sir Derek Walcott as one of the greatest talents the country has produced. A Samarian himself, Sir Derek achieved international acclaim when he received the Nobel prize in Literature in 1992 and the T.S. Eliot prize in 2011.

The students were urged to follow the example of Sir Derek and other noteworthy past pupils of the College in setting and maintaining a standard of excellence.

Kennedy “Boots” Samuel served as the guest speaker, sensitizing the students to the contribution that Sir Derek made toward St. Lucian culture. A moment of silence was observed, where the flag was loaded to half-mast in recognition of the loss of a St. Lucian icon.

Activities honoring the late Sir Derek Walcott will continue at the school throughout the remainder of this week and into next week, after his funeral.

May Sir Walcott have a happy journey to the next plane and may he always be remembered for the joys he brought to others during his stay on this one.
