Shawn Edward: Very sad 24-hours in Dennery-North

Dennery-North MP Shawn Edward has expressed condolences following two tragic incidents involving residents from his constituency.

The latest incident occurred Thursday afternoon when a mini-bus playing the Mabouya Valley route crashed claiming the lives of two people.

Initial reports suggest that the vehicle ran off the road near the Marc junction at Bexon killing a female passenger and a male pedestrian.

Less than twenty-four hours earlier gunmen opened fire on two men at Dernier Rivierre, killing 37 year old Elisheus Swanson and injuring 40-year old Desir Jeremy. Jeremy is in stable condition in hospital, according to police.

“It’s been a very sad last twenty-four hours for us, Edward said. You would have heard of the incident in Dernier Riviere last night and a short while ago there was this accident here in Bexon,” he added.

Edward said he was attending a funeral at Mon Repos when he received news of the accident and made his way to the scene.

“I proceeded to abandon the funeral and come down to Bexon to see for myself exactly what transpired,” he said. “I can confirm that yes, there have been fatalities. I don’t know the exact identities of the persons who have perished but it’s a very sad day and I probably should take the opportunity to express condolences to the families that have been affected by the two incidents.”

Emergency officials say five people, involved in the accident, were transported to hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

The killing at Dernier Rivierre is the second recorded homicide for the year 2018, police say.
