Saint Lucia’s new Education Minister, Shawn Edward, is looking forward to his new role and says there are a number of pressing issues to be addressed, a key one of which is the reopening of schools on September 6.

“I want to ensure as much as possible that we are in a position to open all the schools  on the 6th of September. I know there are ongoing works at a number of schools,” Edward said on his first official day of work this week.

And he he would be updated on the status of the institutions by the Works Unit.

“Once that is done, I will take to the field to see for myself how well the various contractors are progressing,” he stated.

According to the Minister, success in the education sector is heavily dependent on the quality of relationships forged, fostered and built with various education stakeholders including the teachers’ union, the students’ council and parents.

Edward said the entire education fraternity must work as one if the department of education is to succeed and deliver to the people of this country.

The Dennery North MP, who retained his seat at the July 26 general elections, was appointed as Minister for Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology and Vocational Training in the cabinet of the ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP).

He said he was looking forward to forging a cordial working relationship with everyone.

“I try to underscore as much as possible the importance of what we do in the Ministry of Education and unlike agencies say like the Ministry of Infrastructure, where they deal with concrete and steel and buildings and infrastructure, we are dealing with young impressionable lives and how well we deliver in this ministry can determine the quality of citizens we put out there to serve our country in the future,” he explained.

“I take my role very seriously and notice I say role and not job, because mine is really a function where I provide policy oversight, ministerial oversight. There are a lot of technical people working here, a lot of competent people in this department of government and I guess once I can get them to deliver and account for the government’s time to execute the various programmes that have been agreed upon by way of  policy position of this administration, I would have done my job,” Edward stated.
