Skerrit declares international humanitarian emergency

GIS:-The Dominican PM Described the Destruction Caused by Hurricane Maria.

Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica has joined the clarion call for the international community to address climate change and its debilitating effect particularly on Small Island Developing States.

Addressing the General Debate at the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly this week, Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit was adamant in his position on climate change while describing the fateful and destructive blow meted out against his country by Hurricane Maria.

“Mr. President, we dug graves in Dominica. We buried loved ones yesterday, and I am sure that as I return home tomorrow we shall discover additional fatalities as a consequence of this encounter. Our homes are flattened, our buildings roofless, our water pipes smashed, and road infrastructure destroyed. Our hospital is without power and schools have disappeared beneath the rubble. Our crops are uprooted: where there was green, there is now only dust and dirt. The desolation is beyond imagination. Mr. President, fellow leaders, the stars have fallen. Eden is broken,” he said.

“The nation of Dominica has come here to declare an international humanitarian emergency, one that is centered in Dominica, but also encompasses many of our neighbors, including our sister isle Antigua which had to evacuate its citizens from Barbuda. No other generation had seen more than one category five hurricane in its lifetime. In this century, this has happened twice and notably, it has happened in the space of just two weeks. Mr. President, to deny climate change is to procrastinate while earth sinks. It is to deny a truth that we have just lived.”

The OECS Commission is continuing to co-ordinate efforts to provide some measure of relief to the Commonwealth of Dominica, as the country struggles to weather its current situation.

  4. Whilst it is true that the MESSIAH is about to return with righteous judgment, for which we will be held accountable and responsible in the way we’ve lived and treated the earth! If we have failed to prove ourselves good while living on earth,we’ll definitely not be worthy of living in the Righteous Kingdom! While we await the coming of the MESSIAH,it’s our duty to care for the earth as we are asked to do in Genesis.

  5. Imagine you’re leaving just next to a shelter in roseau…and because u’re not a prominent person in society…help will come to you last….dominica smh…fustrated…best I kill myself

  6. Renewables ie Solar, Wind ect, wireless technology heating up the Oceans and the Earth ‘s Atmosphere creating havoc on the Earth’s natural Electromagtice Energy. They also create noise pollution. Dominica and the rest of the Caribbean, please do more research on these technologies before embracing them so quickly. Remember, all is business, embracing the Paris Accord amy seem the noble thing to do but watch out for the true motives. It is all business and not really a genuine attemtp to address climate change. If these big countires and energy companies are truly concerned about climate change, introducing new sources of pollutants, not reducing what is already causing the damage makes no sense. Renewables and wireless is a trilion dollar business opportunity, who stands to make this money not small Islands. Please, do more research and stop thinking this is a noble feel good way to save our planet. They are part of this terrible wave of natural destruction, please investigate before it is far too late.

  7. Wow. So denial is NOT just a river in Africa. Climate change is fake huh? And the world is flat and the sun rotates around the earth. Yeah, that’s the ticket. God help us all.
