SLHTA Official Voices Concern Over Fallout From Conflict Between Russia & Ukraine

The fallout from the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, including the impact on oil prices, is a source of concern for Saint Lucia’s vital tourism industry, the CEO of the Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Industry (SLHTA), Noorani Azeez, has said.

“It is a significant concern for the industry and something that we are monitoring very closely,” Azeez told reporters this week.

The Independent Senator explained that since it reopened during the COVID-19 pandemic, various issues have increased operating costs in local tourism.

While industry officials are comfortable with the current average daily room rates, he did not believe there’s sufficient ‘trickle through’ of stay-over arrivals to the communities.

“In addition to that the high cost of operations has really compounded the situation so contractions in the supply chain is something that has really affected limitations and access to goods and services we need to provide for the needs of our guests and as unfortunate as this is, we are keeping our fingers on the pulse,” Azeez explained.

“We have already had discussions internally on what are some of the products and services that we feel are going to take a direct hit, possibly as a result of this,” he stated.

“I think we have to look at our own consumption habits,” was his response to the question of possible remedial measures.

“When we look at so many of these geo-political forces internationally, some of these exogenous shocks that have continued to impact our economy year in year out, decade after decade, we have to do a better job of looking at what we can source at home. We have to look at what we can consume that is home grown. We have to do a better job of strengthening trade with other regional partners,” Azeez told reporters.

  2. @Okay:- I do not write in response to ignoramuses, but I urge you for once, to drop the election fight between SLP and UWP; the people made their choice a few months ago, the effect of Covid-19 and now the war is crippling the worlds’ economy, and some jackasses just can’t get local politics out of their system. People like you will die worrying about what Chastanet promised, what he did or did not do. Too many like you depend on Government can do for you. Why don’t you go help the Farmers to produce local vegetables, create a greater local industry for the good of all, because the future looks bleak. Lord help these people to do some thinking, open their eyes, leave politics alone. Thanx my Lord.

  3. Where are the 4+ hotels Chastanet and Fedee promised. 6 years not one was built when covid hit no financial relief for misplaced hotel workers NIC could only pay for the 6 months. They same workers who Chastanet and Fedee claimed that they keep the country going some are still unemployed today.

  4. All of Governments dealings with Tourism should be dissolved; here’s why; you will no longer be getting any tourists from the U,K, and from the E.U. this was will not only affect Europe, but north America also. Gas & Oil, food stuff, jobs etc will hit everyone tremendously hard globally. The bad news in St. Lucia with crime and an ineffective so called Police Force, is enough to keep one up all night. This Lawless and Godless society is not the one I expected, growing up in St. Lucia. Now I’m told Poland may be the next Country exiting the E.U. over some financial dispute. That Treaty of Rome, the E.U. is in deep trouble, and the $U.S. is weakening, internationally. Now what does that mean for St. Lucia? you better start praying.

  6. Oh gosh does he know what he’s talking about. An industry being lead by a clueless minister who has appointed square pegs in round holes to be his support system. Minister he liar is more focused on enriching his boys and that’s why he’s pushing vaxx mass so Maundy band and his red boys band can benefit. It’s amazing they could have seen the glaring conflict of interest in the other government but can’t see their rogue dealings and bigger conflict of interest in this man’s dealings.

      • @uh huh make a sensible comment you clueless clown. I am angry not bitter because I thought I voted for better and got worse than Chas. SLP can never get my vote or my family’s vote again. NEVER.
