Citing the need to diversify Saint Lucia’s economy, the opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has committed to establishing a cannabis industry here.
“So that Saint Lucia is not totally dependent on tourism as the COVID-19 experience has demonstrated,” SLP leader, Philip J. Pierre said.
He was addressing a news conference on Tuesday.
Pierre recalled his previous addresses from as far back as two years ago.
He noted that he had alluded then to the economic opportunities in areas like the medicinal and recreational cannabis industry.
“I want to reiterate that the Saint Lucia Labour Party is fully committed to establishing this industry,” the Pierre asserted.
As a result, he said a future Labour Government will embark on a robust education policy
programme.
Pierre said the policy program in the first instance, will lead to the decriminalisation of marijuana with a view to legalising it.
He also spoke of making full use of the economic benefits that can be derived from the production of cannabis.
