The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has reiterated concern over what its leader, Philip J. Pierre, describes as the government’s ‘continued mismanagement’ of the COVID-19 pandemic here.
“The constant increase in the number of deaths and the fact that the number of positive cases has not abated is of great concern to us,” Pierre told a news conference on Tuesday.
According to the SLP leader, Saint Lucia now has the worst COVID-19 statistics in
the Eastern Caribbean.
And he asserted that this country is currently the worst in the Eastern Caribbean in the management of its COVID-19 response.
“This should alarm us,” the Castries East MP declared.
As a result, he called on the government to seriously consider the recommendations from the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association on how to deal with what it sees as a more deadly threat to the country in the next month from COVID-19.
“While the Government as usual is disputing the association’s figures and its basis for its dire predictions, we all have to agree that we are in a very grim situation and that urgent, corrective action is required,” Pierre told reporters.
He welcomed the arrival of vaccine from India and thanked the Indian government as wel as the governments of Barbados and Dominica for ‘coming to our rescue’.
In addition, Pierre recalled that last month he urged the quick implementation of the programme to immunize people as the best defense against COVID -19.
He appealed to everyone, especially the most vulnerable, to register for the vaccination programme.
And Pierre took his jab on Thursday.
