The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has urged the immunisation of the population against COVID-19 as quickly as possible.

SLP leader, Philip J. Pierre, outlined the party’s position in an address Thursday night.

He recommended a slew of measures which Saint Lucia should implement to deal with the current COVID-19 crisis.

Pierre asserted that if implemented, those measures would keep citizens safe.

But he contended that the best path to returning to normalcy is through immunity.

“We need to immunize our population as quickly as possible,” the Castries East MP declared.

“We believe that a suitably resourced vaccination programme should aim to have 75% of our population at the earliest,” Pierre stated.

However he expressed the view that the vaccination programme should be voluntary and should be accompanied by an education campaign.

“I am also pledging the support of all the Parliamentarians and Candidates of
the Saint Lucia Labour Party in the vaccination process, in order to build public confidence in taking the vaccine,” Pierre said.

He observed that the government did not create the COVID-19 pandemic.

However Pierre said the way the crisis was handled has created a ‘national health crisis.’
