The opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has called on citizens to play their part in the fight against dengue, by ensuring that their surroundings are clean and free from stagnant water.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness says it continues to note increases in trends of dengue viral infection.

On Thursday, National Epidemiologist, Dr. Michelle Francois, announced this country’s first dengue-related death.

“Dengue has claimed the life of a young man. May he rest in peace,” the SLP noted on its official Facebook page Friday.

To date, Saint Lucia has recorded a total of 540 confirmed cases of Dengue Fever.

“To the government, many communities are reporting the absence of fumigation services. We urge you to play your role. Stay safe Saint Lucia,” the SLP said on its official Facebook page.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness  says although cases of dengue have been identified throughout the island, most of the confirmed cases are concentrated in the northern region in areas such as Castries, Gros Islet and Central Babonneau.

The ages of confirmed cases range from 3 weeks to 84 years, with the age group 5-14 years accounting for approximately 39% of cases, according to National Epidemiologist, Dr. Michelle Francois.
