SRDF Lecture on Community Based Tourism

Press Release:-On Friday, April 7th, 2017 the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF) facilitated a lecture on community based tourism development at the Anse L’Ivrogne beach – site of the new entrance to the Gros Piton Nature Trail.

The lecture was delivered by Mr. Jimmy Haynes, the Executive Director of the SRDF, to the second year tourism class at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC).

The class was encouraged to be part of the island’s thriving tourism industry and to recognize the importance that the industry plays in the sustainability of the island’s economy. Emphasis on aggressive marketing and proper management of the natural resources for tourism development was also highlighted.

According to Mr. Haynes, “Community based tourism means that everybody must be involved; there must be an all inclusive planning thrust so the benefits are equally shared throughout the entire locale.”

Ms. Tanya Warner, Lecturer in the Hospitality Department at SALCC, expressed her satisfaction at the depth of discussion and interaction during the presentation. “The youth are our future tourism leaders and today was a great opportunity to have an active discussion to brain storm and come to some form of consensus on the way forward in the development of tourism in Saint Lucia,” said Ms.Warner.

The concept of community based tourism involves the provision of services and resources at tourist visiting sites within a local entity to foster income generation in a sustainable and responsible manner.

The Soufriere Foundation is a non-profit company located in Soufriere. Its mandate is to undertake social, cultural, human resource, tourism and infrastructure development in the Soufriere area.  The organization which was established in 1993 generates revenues from its operational sites: the Sulphur Springs Park, Gros Piton Nature Trail, Comfort Center, Soufriere jetties and 88.5 Soufriere FM.
