St Jude Hospital says it has met the timeframe for negotiated payments to employees of the institution who are represented by the National Workers Union (NWU).

The disclosure came in a statement Tuesday from Chairman of the Board of Directors, Wayne harrow.

The statement is reproduced below:

In recognition of the recent industrial tensions between St. Jude Hospital and the employees represented by the National Workers Union (NWU) over the payment of uniform allowances and the agreed lump-sum of $1,800 per employee, we are pleased to inform our stakeholders, clients and the general public that the Hospital has been able to meet the timeframe for payment as negotiated.

It must be noted that the current negotiations and industrial actions were in no way associated with the bargaining units representing doctors and nurses, namely the St. Lucia Medical and Dental Association (the SLMDA) and the St. Lucia Nurses Association (the SLNA), who had successfully negotiated their revised collective agreements with St. Jude Hospital in 2019.

Employees under the NWU will be paid their allowances and lump-sums no later than Thursday June 24, 2021 along with their salaries for the month of June. The accounts department had been awaiting the signal to proceed with the disbursements, and have assured the Board that payments have been processed and will be deposited to the accounts of the employees in a timely manner.

This measure brings to an end this phase of the negotiations for the 2019-2022 triennium, bearing in mind the expectation to reconvene discussions in approximately 3 months, to chart the course for the upcoming triennia.

I extend sincere gratitude to our employees for their unwavering commitment to the Hospital through trying circumstances. Your patience has not gone unnoticed, even in light of the protracted delays in the fulfillment of these obligations.

It is also fitting to acknowledge the efforts of the government of St. Lucia th rough the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Health and Wellness for their concern and strategic interventions.

I take this final opportunity to thank the members of the management team of St. Jude Hospital for their dedication and hard work. Now that this chapter is behind us, we join hand-in-hand in fulfilling our national mandate of providing quality healthcare for our citizens in the south of the island.
