St Vincent PM Says Trump Meeting With Caribbean Delegation ‘Troubling’

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grendines Dr Ralph Gonsalves has described the recent meeting between United States President Donald Trump and some Caribbean leaders as “troubling”.

Speaking to reporters here late Saturday, Gonsalves noted that there was no true representation of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as the current chairman of the regional body, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Timothy Harris, was not invited to the meeting.

He also pointed out that also absent were members of the CARICOM advisory committee including himself, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley.

“None of those persons were invited and for it to be a true CARICOM representation you must at least have the chairman so that any discussion of Venezuela in that context . . . it cuts across the agreement mechanisms that we have put in place,” said Gonsalves who was speaking following a meeting with stakeholders in the regional carrier, LIAT.

Gonsalves, who referred to the actions of the US concerning Venezuela as “a creeping coup d’état” against a legitimate government, said that CARICOM will not fall victim to the entrapping of others.

“We in CARICOM have to be very alive to the mischief that some persons may be up to, to seek to divide us in a manner which we ought not to be divided and therefore reduce the extent of our work.”

On Friday, the Prime Ministers of Jamaica, The Bahamas and St Lucia as well as the Presidents of the Dominican Republic and Haiti met with Trump to discuss the crisis in Venezuela and energy.

Concerning the Venezuelan Petro Caribe preferential arrangement which has been ceased due to the sanctions imposed on Venezuela, Gonsalves contended that it would be “ridiculous” for Caribbean states to abide by an energy agreement by self-proclaimed president Juan Guaido.

“It is entirely ridiculous that you bring something to an end through sanctions and then the beneficiary politically, Mr Guiado is going to offer an energy agreement. We look stupid or something?”

“We are not supporting the principles of non-intervention and non-interference and no threats or force or sanctions. We are not holding a position on these things because we have a Petro agreement. We are doing so because of high principle and our commitment to international law.”

Gonsalves revealed that video conference will be held with the Canadian Government acting as an interlocutor for the Caribbean Governments to speak to Guaido and his representatives.

“I just want to keep CARICOM viable and I don’t have to try and make the CARICOM civilization great again we are an alive civilization of legitimacy. We have a history of achievement and we have a trajectory for ennoblement. We are not better than anybody and nobody is better than us and you must not try to divide us,” the prime minister said.

    • Gonsalves was not invited because he is a
major part of the problem. An unquestioning supporter of Maduro. Like Maduro, Gonsalves is a Marxist-Leninist. Time is long overdue in sanctioning Gonsalves he is a Danger to every Caribbean country.

  1. I usually stay silent on articles online but today I had to comment..St.lucians voted for or against the PM at our last elections..I don’t remember Gonsalves or any member of caricom being on our ballots..we are a sovereign nation with an elected leader..it is his constitutional duty to meet with the most powerful leader in the world…he may not like what Trump says and he does not have to agree but it is is duty as the PM to go and hear what is being offered on our behalf. This is the problem with organisations like caricom and the EU who think that member states cannot and should not act alone for their own benefit. Last time I checked there was only one caricom member who is IMPACS hanging over their heads that that is St.Lucia…The US is the number one source of visitors to our Island..an industry which we depend on more than any other and here are these talking heads on TV and Radio saying the PM should not meet with the leader of that country…HOW DUMB DO THESE GUYS THINK WE ARE?

    • I am in total agreement with you. Sorry let me correct that. You are 100% correct. You hit the nail where it is supposed to be hit. Caricom has been a big failure. From its inception it has only been a market which in itself is starting to fail.My PM made a decision as the PM of St Lucia. He did go to or claim to be representing CARICOM. He never did. This govt policy on the USA is not the same as Kenny’s and Gonsalves’.

    • Thank you ! Your post is a Breath of fresh air . The PM ‘s of Trinidad and Tobago and St Vincent are in Shock and awe – because The US has chosen- the Newly elected St Lucia PM as the leader of the Eastern Caribbean . The st Lucia PM took the lead while- they stood for Nothing – hence the US made them irrelevant. The irrelevant PM ‘s are as Follows : Surinam,
Trinidad and Tobago , st Vincent , Dominica , Antigua , and St kitts and nevis. The neutral Caricom states are Barbados , Grenada , and Belize. The US has Said : Haiti , Jamaica, The Bahamas , Dominican republic, Guyana , and st Lucia the RELEVANT STATES . CARICOM is a Very divided community . The irrelevant states above Voted to let Venezuela solve it deteriorating issues by it selve – Hense no interference. THE NEUTRAL States Voted to abstain from voting . ST LUCIA , JAMAICA , GUYANA , HAITI BAHAMAS AND DOMINICAN REPUBLIC voted [ YES ] that interference in Venezuela is Needed [ Warranted ] for those of you who don’t know what took place – and its outcome: I commend my Newly elected PM of St Lucia – The Honorable Allen Chastanet – May the good lord help guide and protect you .

      • *sigh* yet another emotional, jingoistic and uninformed statement made by those who love carrots from a stick… with “stick” being the operative word – eat mih carrot or feel mih stick.
Its amazing that so many bible thumping, koran reading, bhagwat geeta reciting caribbean people can support an action that is so clearly WRONG. You support the actions of a nation who will resort to any means to imlose their will. You support a nation who, time and time again, have shown their clear disregard for sovereignty… and who covet their neighbours (and others) possessions. You support a form of evil… but then, these are the times we live in.
What makes it even worse is that you support an individual who has played down, and failed to unreservedly condemn attacks on persons in his own country, who’s ethnicities are a reflection of the caribbean. This very same individual has also described nations with the same ethnic majority as “sh!th*les”.
Colonialism and conquest is alive and well. Divide and conquer will always work on the naive and ignorant. So, enjoy your carrot for as long as it lasts…. and the stick that follows.

    • Informed St. Lucian you raised some very valid points. I am all for Caricom but in this issue what the Prime Minister did was in the interests of Saint Lucia FIRST. So on that I concurred. Those who see otherwise doesn’t understand the whole concept of geo politics

    • Lol such a long statement only to talk crap. Stop trying to potray yourself as someone smart when your statement clearly proves otherwise. But im not surprised another sellout like the pm. Try not to comment on stuff that is far greater than your mental capacity. Anyways time will tell. Hope you wont be part of the percentage complaining when we face the consequences of the actions of our pm. Who is just like u. Not too smart. But thats understandable this is st lucia, where its always about supporting your party no matter what even if they are guiding them over a cliff smh.

      • I will be back here shortly as I am awaiting an intelligent comment that focuses on the issues raised just like all others did…
        Your ignorance is disturbing.

  2. To Informed St. Lucian i couldn’t agree with you more – St. Lucia is a sovereign country. On another note this is the same Gonzalves government which is not implementing agreement of CARICOM, the same Gonzalves who is not extending to neighbouring OECS countries national treatment in his own country.

if CARICOM is so united how is it then we do not have political unity amongst CARICOM countries?

Why are CARICOM countries still cutting each others throughts?

What i see happening in CARICOM is that every CARICOM country seems for its own self.

Did our Prime Minister request to that meeting our was he invited by the most powerful economic and military power of the world

    • Who cared what you think? What is his motive? President Trump is the best present the US has ever had.

      • Really. Then you need to be in America. Cannot say that if you DO NOT live in the USA. Worst and most CORRUPT. Approval rating 39% amongst Americans.
Remember his comment Sh–Hole Countries, Africa and Haiti.

  3. boi syop all this talk and come together .god dam it u all want citizen to come together and youvall divided what nonsencr is this now

  4. Why then have Canada speak for Caricom, when Canada takes side with USA? Why can’t Caricom speak to Venezuela rather than through intermediary, when Canadian position is at odds with Caricom?

    • That is a great question ! Caricom is a fractured organization . Caricom try to speak with one voice like the EU to No avail . For Example the Taiwan and China issue . The Counties that have Diplomatic relations with Taiwan are : Belez ,Haiti, st kitts and nevis , st Lucia and st Vincent and the grenadines. By contrast the Counties that have Diplomatic relations with China are : Surinam, Guyana ,T& T , GRENADA, Barbados , Dominica , Antigua, Dr and Jamaica and the Bahamas – hense Caricom states are all over the place – on different issues . Please not : states with Diplomatic relations with Taiwan – Vote For Taiwan at the UN . States with Diplomatic relations with China – vote for China at the UN . Canada is acting as an intermediary for our very divided CARICOM.

  5. Can someone breakdown why Canada speak obo Caricom? What we see here in FL USA is like every CARICOM country seems to be for its own self. IJS

  6. I was a student at UWI and taught by Ralph. As with most students I still have a ‘soft spot’ for him and have met him on a few occasions since then. It seems I have matured but he is still caught in the failed “Communist/socialist/progressive/liberal /left wing paradigm of the 1970s.
Fact: His left wing policies and vacuous pronouncements do nothing for our people including his support of the murderous regime in Venezuela.
CARICOM is no more than a talk shop and stage for the narcissistic Caribbean politician and has been a waste of taxpayers money considering what the potential has been.
The Caribbean has had over 150 Prime Ministers and thousands of Ministers since Independence – how many of these self serving leftists have done anything but enrich themselves?
Ralph as expected is just one more of the leftists with Trump derangement syndrome who have attempted to prevent the President from doing his duty. But that is the way of the Left. Power hungry. Self serving. Destructive.
Had he been invited he would have taken his corpulent self to Florida to meet the Present of the United States Donald Trump.
It is time we in the Caribbean jettison the anti Christian anti progress leftistism that is destroying economies families and communities and embrace true conservative principles.

    • WOW! you hit the nail on the head…and there I thought that St.Lucians were not smart enough to recognise what the US media is selling us as news…I. highly recommend you listen to Jordan Peterson on youtube (Most probably you already are) on the subjects of socialism and communism

  7. Thank you ! Your post is a Breath of fresh air . 8. Informed St. Lucian you raised some very valid points. I am all for Caricom but in this issue what the Prime Minister did was in the interests of Saint Lucia FIRST. So on that I concurred. Those who see otherwise doesn’t understand the whole concept of geo politics

  9. This is not about St.Lucia. This is about a PM with a personality trait we cannot shake off. He cannot work with people . His way or no way regardless of the consequences or who ends up paying . St.Lucians will have to do just like Barbados in time to come and that is, reverse the long term damage done by this government and struggle to achieve short term projects.

  10. This is just another small part of the US trying to install their own puppet leader in Venezuela. By today Trump has forgotten all about the leaders of the what he called “shithole” countries he met. Did our PM get to talk about lifting the sanctions on our police force for protecting the public? Probably not!

  11. Slu has to many two legged snakes. And trump has no power to undermine Caricom. But then again majoirty of these comments are from dumb people so im not surprised. And i wonder how pm will react if pierre considers himself as interim pm after as has won his elections.

  12. Alan Chastanet is both a “breath of fresh air” yet a leader with clear failings.
We are fortunate in St. Lucia to have someone with a positive viewpoint who constantly moves forward towards the Promised Land and who does not continue the morose arrogant self serving veil of importance practiced by Kenny Anthony even as he was unable to correct the failings in our society.
Chastanet has gone away from the failed Far Left positioning of the Labour Party and that gives us hope for the future. His working with our traditional partners could bear fruit in the future. See the Trump meeting.
Unfortunately after 3 years in powers we have also seen too much lack of structure, running after pipe dreams and poor adherence to the need for working on the details of those dreams. The best leaders PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL. Chastanet is like a loose cannon.
The financial profligacy is damning and he has surpassed even Kenny in that regard and so far has nothing to show with a 0.6% growth rate last year.
For an Administration with someone known for her piety in their midst they have been immoral and hyprocritical in their support of Ubaldus. Flood like Montoute and King have lost their way.
On security they are no further ahead than the Labour Party and the mess in the health system is as bad as with Labour.
Chastanet is running out of time but unfortunately the alternative is just as bad with the vindictiveness and lust for power by Labour staring us in the face.

  13. Each and every CARICOM prime minister would have hauled their pretty little behind over to Florida if the President had invited them..thats why I ignore their hypocritical stance on the meeting that took place with our PM….Throughout history the socialism that Venezuela has practiced has causing the death of over one hundred million persons…Socialism always lead to communism…Thats why the people of Brazil rejected it

  14. Well, it’s not much of a surprise. Trump rose to power by international meddling that went against his country’s democratic process, and he was not elected by a majority of the voters in his country.

So he is happy to do the same thing elsewhere by supporting Guaidó.

And for the confused posters, don’t flatter yourselves. Trump didn’t pick St Lucia because of how powerful it is in the Carribean region, he picked the PM because an intelligence briefing identified St Lucia, the Bahamas and Haiti are all weak enough to be brought to heel. He is playing a numbers game, trying to show that a large number of countries around the world support what he wants to do. Remember he is known to have been pushing for a military intervention in Venezuela for years now. Well before he was calling anyone “rocket man” and trying to pick a fight in North Korea.

Who here is really surprised that America is trying to install a puppet government in yet another oil rich nation?

    • Actually buddy the Attorney General of the USA just debunked your Russian collusion theory…..no collusion no obstruction of justice.and if you knew anything about what really happened you would know that the Russian trolls did run facebook ads for both Hilary and Bernie sanders…Get informed and stop talking about what you do not know

  15. Well said Anon, this romance from the 1970 has caused to many deaths all over South America, socialists comunists never win elections unless they are rigged, their life is spent with the gun in their hands, eliminate all oposition,no fredom of press no freedom of movement. The only exception to this rule was Salvador Allende in Chile, but look how it ended. Why dont they bring some Venezuelans that live in St Lucia,to a TV or radio program. All the Cuban scholarships they give us is pure political propaganda, all Petro Caribe oil to the Caribean is Socialist propaganda, that they use latter on in international forums,to boost their regimes and we fall like idiots, and vote for them and thank them, and kiss their gonads, because we feel we owe them. Our Socialist friends and partners are livin in stone age times, all screwed up,people suffering and starving earning a salary of US 10 dollars a month. And we still have idiots amongst us that want to take us in that direction, and the press gives them time and space to spiew their nonsence, but hey we live in Democracy, welcome

    • Very correct Castries Fisherman. Just as the Democrats have African Americans under bondage in their urban concrete jungles we continue TO pontificate about socialist/liberal policies that keep us backward and unable to reach the heights that black people could reach with their great talents. Our people are great but continues to be destroyed by the liberal mindset of our culture.

  16. A lot has been said there. So I will basically add this for those coming after Gonsalves and praising Cahstanet. For one, gonsalves talk the talk, but have failed to create a successful St. Vincent. He is in it to benefit his ego like all other caribbean politicians, sadly. But Gonsalves does have a salient point, even when he fails to observe what he preaches. White people have been dividing and conquering all of you for so long that you all have normalised the process as natural and normal when its not. Trump knows how the game is played in the little islands, just promise them investments and they will do your bidding. Lucians have been selling out other islands from time immemorial. Sir Salop John actually agreed to the Grenada invasion, again falling for white people BS. Chastanet is no different. in fact he think he better than you all. As for demonising socialism, your capitalism aint so good either. Their level of inequality in the world is astounding as we speak. But yet you drink American propaganda like red koolaid without asking questions. the US dont care about any island except whats in it for them. any one island is a fool to believe otherwise. so right now they need our black people to go after Maduro, so they come knocking. as for the China issue; they tried that same sheet with China too. But the Chinese woke up and now say to them; hell or high water you aint go divide and conquer us no more. time and space does not permit a history lesson here on that one. So basically, CARICOM should have taken a united stance on this issue. but again, this outcome does not surprise.

    • You are correct crate tings about the inequality. But completely brainwash and propagandized about the cause. The cause is the complete control of our culture by the liberal left wing elites I.e. the bankers the liberal academia the liberal media the liberal politicians who control the heights of power and keep our black people in bondage.
They destroy our families, rape the tax payer and brainwash us into supporting policies that destroy our black culture.
They are now the power not conservatives. Recognize that and you know how deluded you are. Facebook – liberal. Google- liberal. NY times – liberal. Twitter – liberal. They are the new masters determining your thoughts.
The inequality is the billionaire and millionaire liberals vs us .

      • And your point is? You have none. You wrote an entire paragraph on nothing? Its time you wake up and smell the coffee. What does this have to do with Liberalism? By the way; Liberals can mean a host of things. You are brainwashed to think that everything is Liberalism this and liberal that; its just another side of the same darn coin. You people need to stop about people destroying your culture as if you all are helpless victims, when you all just perpetuate the bondage by actions like those referenced above.
