Sugar Relief – 15 Containers Arrive In Saint Lucia

Fifteen containers of brown sugar, each containing 500 bags of the commodity, arrived in Saint Lucia on Thursday from Belize, the Consumer Affairs Department has announced.

The brown sugar arrived amid concerns over the ready availability of the item because shipments had been delayed due to the challenges associated with the global COVID-19 pandemic. But officials said there was no sugar shortage.

“Some retailers have already made purchases and consumers can expect brown sugar supplies from today at some outlets. We thank you for your patience,” a statement Friday from the Consumer Affairs Department said.

Earlier this week, Commerce Minister Emma Hippolyte  told reporters that sugar resources were being managed while the new shipments were awaited.

“But I still want to exhort Saint Lucians – we need to manage the supplies of what we have because of the challenges with shipping,” Hippolyte stated.
