Joel Jn.Charles, Physical Education teacher at the Ciceron Combined School and Faustina Edward, a final year law student in the UK have teamed up to create a scholarship fund dubbed ‘One Step Closer’.

The pair founded this initiative as a means to help students in their community with their education by providing them with the resources they need to go through the academic year.

Both Jn.Charles and Edward have had experience working with students through the Youth On Fire Movement After School Assistance Programme revamped by Edward and Gabriella Bellegarde, a US Peace Corps Volunteer in 2014.

The recipient of the first One Step Closer Scholarship is Grade Four student, McQuain Daniel. McQuain has been a consistent performer throughout his time at the Anse-la-Raye RC Infant School and during his first year at the Anse-la-Raye Primary School.

One Step Closer was able to provide all McQuain’s stationery and miscellaneous items, as well as a new school bag, school shoes, school uniforms and payment of his school fees.

The ethos of One Step Closer is rooted in Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education with the aim of ensuring inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.

In particular, One Step Closer focuses on target 4B, which looks at the expansion of scholarships being made available globally.

Farley Edward Social Media Manager of One Step Closer said “It’s a privilege taking such an active role in my community. I have been in youth development for some time now and benefited from society. Being part of One Step Closer is my way of giving back by contributing to a child’s holistic success.”

The trio anticipate the growth of the scholarship fund in the coming years and hope to reach as many students, from infant to tertiary level education.

The growth of One Step Closer has begun, by the team welcoming Kersversations, a blog founded by fellow Anse-la-Raye youth, Kerstin Medard.

The One Step Closer team is extremely grateful for the support from the general public and anticipate support from other members of the public and local and international organisations.
