Teenage inmate at Bordelais Correctional Facility gives birth

A teenage inmate at Bordelais Correctional Facility (BFC) gave birth recently at Victoria Hospital, it has been reported.

The sixteen year old female was pregnant at the time that she entered the facility, persons familiar with the situation told the Times.

The inmate gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday, according to reports.

It was her second child.

The mother has been removed from the general female inmate population.

She and her child now occupy a specially converted room at the facility where she is able to take care of her baby with the help of volunteers, the Times was informed.

The Department of Human Services has also become involved.

One source told the Times that because of the teenager’s circumstances, it is quite evident that she and her baby will be taken care of better inside the BCF than if they were outside.

It was not immediately clear why the teenager had been incarcerated, but sources told the Times that she  was serving a brief prison sentence and is expected to be released within a few weeks.
