Tourism: Chastanet Warns Of Impending Tourism Challenges

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has warned that Saint Lucia’s important tourism industry will face a challenging summer and fall.

“We don’t know what is going to happen with tourism. I can say to you right now without fear of contradiction that the summer and the fall are not going to be kind to Saint Lucia,” the former Tourism Minister told a news conference Tuesday.

Chastanet cited a cut in the negotiated airline seats.

“So even if you were to go out today and increase your marketing, which they’re not doing, how do you fulfill the demand because the people can’t get here,” the United Workers Party (UWP) leader observed.

He recalled that JetBLUE airlines announced plans to cut capacity globally by ten percent last week.

And he noted that the rise in the cost of fuel is an added issue.

“So, therefore, a destination like Saint Lucia, which is much further away and is not spending the money marketing to generate the demand for Saint Lucia, we’re going to be in trouble,” the former Prime Minister told reporters.

  1. I totally agree but making it worst St Lucia protocol for unvaccinated people to quarantine is totally unreasonable. My fellow St Lucians in the UK are not vaccinated and they refuse to travel to their home country to quarantine for 7 days when most people can only go away for 14 days. The St Lucian government need to open the country to all of us with a PCR test like Grenada, Dominica and Jamacia. I am sure this will help the tourism industry.

  2. We can just politely ask the last administration for a loan and convert St.Lucia into a Singapore. In my opinion I belive they can give us an interest free loan.

  3. JetBLUE airlines announced plans to cut capacity globally by ten percent last week. << Is jet-blue the only airline traveling here? You politrick-sters are hell bent to create fear and drive your citizen into poverty while you people are enjoying a posh life style. Tourism will rather increase than decrease, the European destination will suffer due to the ongoing war while the Mexico, Latin American and Caribbean will spin around coming out of the pandemic. So get your act right Mr. Gold Spoon. And BTW when you were in power boosting tourism was increasing and increasing, what happen to the taxes from the service charge from the vast amount of tourist you claim. Your 1500$ couldn't save you at the polls… reboot your brains and come again.
