A 38 year old French woman died this week after a shark bit off her leg in Orient Bay, St. Martin, media reports say.
Orient Bay is a popular beach on the French part of the Caribbean island which is shared with St. Maarten, the Dutch-controlled portion.
St. Martin officials say shark attacks are very rare.
They suspect that a tiger shark was involved.
The incident on Thursday is reported to have occurred some 500 feet from shore.
St. Martin authorities have banned swimming and water sport activities until December 16.
The deceased in the shark attack was not identified.
