A 38 year old French woman died this week after a shark bit off her leg in Orient Bay, St. Martin, media reports say.

Orient Bay is a popular beach on the French part of the Caribbean island which is shared with  St. Maarten, the Dutch-controlled portion.

St. Martin officials say shark attacks are very rare.

They suspect that a tiger shark was involved.
