T&T Dad Accused Of Beating, Burning Infant

Trinidad Express:- MARCUS JOHN has been denied bail for allegedly burning the hands of a three-year-old boy and hitting him in the eye and mouth.

John, 33 of Marabella, appeared before San Fernando magistrate Natalie Diop on Thursday.

She remanded him into custody until after the Easter vacation.

Diop read the two charges to John which alleged that on a date unknown in December 2018 and in March 30 this year, he assaulted a child in a manner likely to cause him physical and emotional suffering.

John was not called upon to plea to the indictable charges laid under the Children’s Act by constable Nicole St John of the Child Protection Unit.

John, a father of two and whose wife is pregnant, was represented by attorney Subhas Panday.

Police prosecutor Sgt Veano Ragoo objected to John being placed on bail, saying the child was still in the hospital. He also said he was not in possession of a tracing of John’s criminal record.

Diop remanded John into custody until Wednesday for a tracing, if any, to be produced.

John will face the First Court magistrate on that day.

The three-year-old boy’s hands were burnt after they were allegedly held over the open flame of a stove. Months later, the boy was struck in the eye and also hit with a ruler on his mouth when he was unable to write a letter of the alphabet.
