Two Bulgarian nationals are in custody in neighbouring Martinique after a drug bust at sea involving 310 kilos of cocaine, local reports say.

The French Navy vessel Germinal seized the cocaine East of the Lesser Antilles, despite an attempt by the two traffickers to set the boat carrying the dugs on fire, according to Martinique.FranceAntilles.

The online publication reported that the French Navy crew managed to put out the fire and confiscate the cocaine that had not been consumed by the flames.

After arresting the Bulgarians, aged 44 and 51, the French Navy crew handed them over to anti-narcotics investigators in Martinique where the duo  were indicted on Friday, July 9 on multiple drug-related charges and remanded in custody.

Investigators estimate  the value of the drugs seized on the high seas at over nine million Euros.
The latest drug bust was the 7th for this year for the French armed forces in the region, bringing the quantity of cocaine withdrawn from the market to more than 6.7 tonnes.
