Two Saint Lucia murder convicts have been granted parole.

The development took place Wednesday at Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) where the historic Parole Board hearing was held.

According to the officials, they expect the paper work facilitating the actual release of the inmates to be completed so that the parolees could be home soon.

The two male inmates have served over 20 years of their custodial sentences for murder.

Earlier, in brief remarks before the parole hearings got underway, Home Affairs Minister, Hermangild Francis, urged the duo to become model citizens if they were released.

One official who spoke on condition of anonymity described the two parolees as “two of the safest inmates”.

According to the official, both had been highly recommended and their bid to obtain parole encountered no opposition from the families of their victims.

Another official expressed the view that Wednesday’s development would serve as a ‘motivating factor’ for other inmates to apply for parole and to engage in prison rehabilitation programmes.

However that official made it clear that the granting of parole would not be a ‘free for all’ and that to be successful, applicants would have to meet strict individual requirements.

It was explained that there are currently several applications before the Parole Board and even more are anticipated.

The Department of Home Affairs has indicated that existing legislation does not allow for disclosure of release dates and the identification of the parolees.
