Two senior citizens are dead following a devastating early morning Castries fire Saturday, emergency officials say.
The deceased, a male and a female, were in the house that was on fire, it was reported.
Their bodies were removed after the fire from the building which measured some 12 ft X 20 ft.
The blaze occurred after midnight in Trou Rouge, Marchand, a short distance away from the bridge, according to the officials.
Fire Services officials told St Lucia Times that the fire started in a wooden building.
They explained that the building was fully engulfed by the time two fire trucks arrived on the scene.
Reports indicate that the firefighters faced an uphill battle in preventing the flames from spreading to other structures.
But another house adjacent to the burning building was affected by the original blaze.
The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
Prime Minister Allen Chastanet and Castries East MP, Philip J. Pierre, were on the scene.
Pierre, who is leader of the opposition, has extended condolences to the families of the bereaved.
