A former US Marine who fled to the Saint Lucia in 2014 while facing child pornography charges, has been repatriated to face the courts, multiple United States media reports say.
The suspect has been identified as Sebastian Marcus Day.
According to WFTV 7, the 27 year old traveled to the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia just after the sheriff’s office executed a search warrant at his home, leading to 25 counts of possession of child pornography.
The news outlet quoted law enforcement authorities in the US as saying that deputies spent the next few years working with the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs to have Day extradited back to the U.S.
But it said the request was denied in 2018 as, at the time, Saint Lucia did not consider Day’s conduct in Volusia County a crime.
“Later that year, Saint Lucia modified its computer misuse laws to criminalize possession of child pornography with intent to distribute, clearing the way for Day to be returned to the U.S,” according to WFTV 7.
Published Reporter.com reported that the US submitted a new request for Day’s extradition the following year, and he was arrested by Saint Lucian authorities in November 2019.
The extradition was completed this week after Day had a petition to overturn it denied, it was reported.
A senior law enforcement official here told St Lucia Times that prior to his extradition, the suspect was held and kept in custody at Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) for about three weeks.
United States Marshalls arrived in Saint Lucia this week to escort him back to the US.
