The ruling United Workers Party (UWP) has urged the opposition to stop playing politics amid the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The UWP made the comments in a news release on Monday.

It came in response to what the UWP described as ‘the blatantly misleading press statement’ released by the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP).

“From the outset, their statement that the COVID-19 protocols were set to expire on January 31, 2021 is false. In fact according to Statutory  Instrument #11 of 2021, the  “Order expires on the 1st day of February, 2021”, the UWP said.

According to the ruling party, Prime Minister Allen Chastanet was on an observation tour of the situation as it existed on the ground, and to witness the application of protocols.

The UWP release said Chastanet took the opportunity to distribute masks, and continues to practice a hands-on and personal approach to leading from the front in this crisis.

It observed that in the fluid situation which exists with the COVID-19 pandemic the Prime Minister has had to evaluate and re-valuate, as the situation on the ground is fluid, and can change at any time.

“Rest assured that any changing timelines are solely for the purpose of assessing new information and the formulation of well-advised decisions,” the UWP statement noted.

It said this UWP government has always been focused on making better of the healthcare situation which it inherited from the last administration.

“The Saint Lucia Labour Party has failed to work hand-in-hand with this government in the fight against the Coronavirus, from the inception.”

A NEMAC meeting is scheduled for Tuesday February 2, after a weekend of meetings and consultations to guide upcoming COVID-19 protocols,” the UWP disclosed.

“We urge the SLP to stop playing politics at a time when we are faced with a global pandemic. Let us all, truly put St. Lucians first. Together we can win this war,” the UWP release concluded.
