UWP Says SLP Breaks Election Promise On Elimination Of Residential Tax

Press Release:–  In 2017, the United Workers Party Government introduced a Property Tax Amnesty for the people of Saint Lucia.
This meant that for over four years no one was charged Property Tax. This was an initiative that predated COVID-19 and was part of the United Workers Party’s plans to continuously ease the burden of taxes on the people of Saint Lucia.
Among the tax relief efforts of the UWP was also the decrease of Value Added Tax which was instituted by the SLP administration in 2012.
In its 2021 Manifesto, Philip J Pierre’s SLP boldly promised to completely “remove the current Property Tax on residential buildings.” We now know that this was another part of the big lie.
At Tuesday’s sitting of Parliament, the Prime Minister only amended the Land and House Tax Act, which basically extends the UWP initiated Property Tax Freeze initiative.
Mr. Pierre failed miserably as he attempted to hide the fact that his Government was not removing the Residential Tax as was promised.
One of the hallmarks of the UWP administration was tax relief measures. We wanted to ensure that we reduced burdensome taxing of the people of Saint Lucia.
The SLP has adopted an approach of simply extending or piggy-backing on our initiatives because as we all can see they have no plan. As one of their members recently said, “there is no dynamic thinking going on in the SLP”.
The hold on property tax for the last 4 years was a UWP initiative. We are pleased to see it continue, however the Prime Minister went to great lengths in the House to not give our administration the credit for commencing this initiative and also tried to pass it off as the same as eliminating the tax altogether which is what he promised.
He is trying to hoodwink the voters once again because this was already in place under a UWP administration.
The Prime Minister hid behind the UWP initiative and now says he will conduct a review of the tax system in Saint Lucia. The Ministry of Finance is filled with reviews of Saint Lucia’s tax regime. There is no need for another review. We know what the issues are and the prime minister needs to admit once and for all he has no plan.
Speaking in the House of Parliament on Tuesday Choiseul/Saltibus MP Honourable Bradly Felix also pointed out the hypocrisy: “It is a bill we will support because it is something that was initiated under our watch but the promise that the current government made to the people was that they would cancel the residential tax. When you say you would cancel it everyone would think it is in perpetuity.”
Another on a long list of promises that the SLP has failed to deliver.

  1. @confused I say 50% VAT increase instead… maybe then we’ll wake up. Let them worry about what chas said… didn’t he bring it down and probably had you’ll re- elected him I’m sure he would have done it. Chas had plans for us but it’s sad , thought I was living in st.Lucia, only to realize now I’m in the Congo… the black man mentally. Always fight the whit man, because we feel he’s always coming to take our people to become slaves. Don’t forget it was the same black man you’ll Cherish so much who sold your own kind. This is a sour st.lucia

  2. Like the way you promised to remove VAT entirely!??…..or the way we would be able to travel to the USA without a VISA???

  3. St Lucians are so ignorant they don’t understand this article. The SLP promised to eliminate house tax and when they got elected on all the lies they simply renege on it . I think SLP should introduce 40% VAT and let me se off y’all will not wake up. Preying on your ignorance

The division this slp administration has caused in this country is very sad –

Are you listening to your self?? .I was part of and a member of UWP.

The past six years was the time the country experience the most corruption. People were deliberately punished for their perceived party affiliation.

We will remove Chastnet and all those who supported the Belrose doctrine.

We know the UWP do not have a chance with these dirty characters. No true UWP will admit that Chastnet ‘s government policies was good for the country.

Chastnet will forever go down in the annals of our history as a one time failed political leader with a legacy of corruption

  6. So where is the media? Have they all become an extension of GIS. These are the pertinent questions they need to ask they have a responsibility to be the voice of the people. SLP should not be allowed to get away with this broken promise which is one of the reasons we voted SLP

  7. UWP HACKS and executives you all are so desperate , what is wrong in reviewing and studying a system before implementing a promise change.

UWP promised VAT removal but only decrease VAT by 2.5% and immediately increase fuel tax on citizens.
    SHAMELESS

  8. The division this slp administration has caused in this country is very sad…these old hacks preventing the country from moving forward but we the youths will make a statement in the next election we can see the difference between the two parties so give chas back he’s jacket and if y’all ain’t got no evidence of corruption towards him shut the hell up bunch of racist people making me sick.

  9. I listened to the last Parliament session and was taken aback by the stupidity that has graced our Parliament. If I was a younger person in St Lucia I would not be looking to Parliament for inspiration. The Speaker was a real Clown. The session was a noisy affair with back and forth from Helaire, Frederick, Chastenet and King for the most part, but what pissed me off was Bay Bay and that preschooler Norbert, claiming that for the first time all St Lucians will benefit from barrel concessions regardless of the constituency they are from or party they support. What a travesty on these mongrels that want to represent people.

  10. So this article is basically saying that extending a uwp initiated amnesty by the slp is a bad thing and is a lie on the part of pjp? Hear that…you see yol uwp people…take a hike and give the man a chance..de ban conpawason!

  11. What we need is for Chastanet and his UWP henchmen who are owners of mega mansions to pay a luxury property tax to the government. What sense does it make to give tax break to those who can affort to make the payment? St. Lucia needs a progressive taxation system. Government should not give tax break just for purpose of tax break.

The backward policies of the UWP contributed to its ignominious defeat at the 2021 elections. I thought they would learn from their mistakes but they are hell bent on thier idiocy.
