UWP:Electoral Department caught off guard

The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has welcomed the announcement of a June 6, 2016 general elections.

But Party Chairman, Guy Mayers, told a news conference this morning that the sudden announcement has caught the Electoral Department off guard and unprepared.

“They had been given the go ahead to publish the new list by the end of May,” the UWP official told a news conference this morning.

Nevertheless Mayers asserted that the UWP is “perfectly poised” to win at the polls.

He expressed the view that the UWP would do so with a comfortable margin.

Mayers said it is a fact that the ruling party has been a national disaster, with every initiative undertaken by it being at a devastating cost to the people of this country.

The former National Security Minister described the current administration as a disaster of a government led by a delusional Prime Minister.

He expressed the view that the Saint Lucia Labour Party has failed to keep its election promises, and stands as a lesson as to how destructive a bad government can be.

Mayers asserted that Saint Lucians have not forgotten the lie disguised as a promise that the SLP uttered, to inject one hundred million dollars into the economy immediately on coming into government.

The UWP Chairman noted that five years later, absolutely nothing has been done about the astronomical unemployment rate, increased crime and the skyrocketing cost of living.

On the issue of the June 6, 2016 election date, Mayers said:

“Because of our history it is understandable that some members might be jittery due to the short eighteen day deadline.”

He accused Prime Minister Doctor Kenny Anthony of breaking all the traditions that have been established in this country.

“Yes he talked about the laws, but it has become a tradition in Saint Lucia that a minimum of twenty-one day notice is given for general elections,” the UWP Chairman told the news conference.

He recalled that even then Prime Minister, Sir John Compton, who called two elections within a month, gave the twenty-one day notice.
