COVID-19 wardens entered the minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Castries Monday afternoon during a funeral service, causing a stir, eyewitnesses say.

According to one eyewitness who was present, two wardens – a male and a female, entered the church about 3.00 pm.

“The body was in the church – the family was at the entrance coming in,” the eyewitness recalled.

However, he said the two wardens who had a list in their possession, were approaching people in attendance.

“They escorted those who were not on the list outside,” the man told St Lucia Times.

He said when some in attendance objected, the wardens called for ‘backup’.

According to the man, at least two other officers came into the church.

As a result, the officers escorted some people at the funeral out of the building, he told St Lucia Times.

But he expressed the view that those in attendance were observing the COVID-19 protocols.

“There were marks on the benches for social distancing,” the eyewitness observed.

A thirty second video shows officers in plain clothes and COVID-19 wardens in uniform in the church.

And the officiating priest addresses them in the recording that appeared on social media.

“Officers and wardens please, you all are now causing a nuisance and disturbance to the service,” the clergyman asserts.

The statement prompted some applause.

“I know you have a job – I know you have a role to perform but when at this time you want to put somebody out, it becomes a nuisance,” the priest declares.
