A Babonneau police patrol Sunday evening intervened during a clash involving supporters of the ruling United Workers Party (UWP) and the opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), eyewitnesses say.
According to reports, the rival supporters engaged in some pushing, hitting and tugging of each other before the officers separated them.
A law enforcement official explained that the officers cautioned the individuals engaged in the conflict and helped them to resolve their differences, thus defusing the situation with the result that the conflict ended.
The official told St Lucia Times that no one was arrested as a result of the incident at Chassin, Babonneau, about 6.25 pm.
Videos that captured part of the incident were posted on social media and quickly went viral.
Police say that an argument started over road markings in support of one party which were painted over in support of the other main party.
According to officers, the argument quickly escalated with individuals coming to blows.
But no one was seriously injured.
“People should just respect each other’s right to support any political party and refrain from acts of violence,” a law enforcement official explained.
