Pierre raised the alarm this week when he appeared on the Radio 100\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">programme<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0&#8216;What Makes You Mad<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8216;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said it was a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">major<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0problem and said small businesses were under pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pierre, the Minister of Finance, noted an absence of itinerant vendors selling products from suitcases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;A major problem I have is what do I do about small businesses under pressure because of internet sales. I have this major problem. Philosophically, I know where I want to go because of where I came from,&#8221; Pierre stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He also said he wanted to open the discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The President of the Saint Lucia Craft and Dry Goods Vendors Association, Peter &#8216;Ras Ips&#8217; Isaac, echoed the Prime Minister&#8217;s concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He explained that Internet sales\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">have a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">huge<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0negative impact on<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0local small businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Isaac, when locals purchase goods online, it affects the national economy, threatens jobs, and undermines small businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He felt there\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was no simple<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0solution to the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;We are in a serious dilemma now,&#8221; the Vendors Association President told St. Lucia Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nevertheless, a business consultant advised small businesses to advertise on platforms like Facebook and establish online payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The consultant used the example of a seamstress who could advertise garments online to a specific target audience, offering price discounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Online sales are instant and people don&#8217;t have to travel to your business place,&#8221; the official told St. Lucia Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The consultant also suggested setting up websites and offering a delivery service in the case of restaurants, noting that in today&#8217;s world, people\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are glued<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to their smartphones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Someone may not feel like cooking and want a nice pumpkin soup.
