Pierre Cites Majority Support As UWP Projects Next Election Win

On the third anniversary of his Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) landslide election win on July 26, 2021, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre was confident of majority support for his administration.

However, the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) is projecting victory at the next general elections.

The UWP suffered a massive defeat at the last polls, retaining only two of the eleven seats in the 17-seat House of Assembly.

And Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre was confident that his SLP continues to enjoy the electorate’s support.

” The majority of the people of Saint Lucia have understood the government. The majority support the government, and the majority of the people realise that in trying times, the government has performed and will continue to perform,” Pierre stated.

Speaking on Friday, he thanked the electorate for voting his party into government and expressed his appreciation for their support.

The Castries East MP recalled that the SLP’s ‘mantra’ has been ‘putting the people first’ and he outlined several initiatives in health and other areas that have improved people’s lives.

“There has not been a government in recent times that has done so many things to support people directly, not only socially but economically,” the PM declared.

The UWP vehemently disagrees, accusing the SLP administration of mismanagement, misconduct and weakness in dealing with a violent crime spike that has gripped the country.

At an opposition news conference on Wednesday, UWP Chairman Therold Prudent projected victory for the party at the next general elections.

Prudent explained that the party had completed an internal review, obtaining a clear sense of what went wrong in the last elections and what needed addressing to wage a ‘serious campaign’ against the incumbent SLP.

He said the UWP was excited about its candidate election process.

“Let no one believe that we are not ready,” the UWP Chairman told Wednesday’s news conference.

“We are doing background checks and vetting to present men and women of character as part of the team that will take the United Workers Party all the way to victory in the next elections,” Prudent stated.
