62-year-old Monica Calixte lost her life after she was struck by a pickup along the Vide Bouteille highway at about 8 pm on Saturday, August 3.
Reports indicated that Calixte was attempting to cross the highway median, although there are walkovers for pedestrian safety.
However, one close family member recalled that the deceased feared heights.
According to the relative, since Calixte moved to Bisee, Castries, she consistently avoided using the walkover.
“She going on the beach just across – behind the Sir Ira school, she would never take the walkover. She would just see the road empty, and just jump there, you understand?”
The relative said that although he knows Calixte’s actions were wrong, he believes drivers should be a bit more compassionate towards pedestrians.
“To the drivers, I might say, even though someone does not take the walkover, at least give them a chance. At least take it easy, but you never know. You don’t have to be knocking somebody,” he stated.
The relative is now asking all pedestrians to learn from Monica Calixte’s death and use walkovers.

Sir you’re saying drivers deliberately try to hit pedestrians not using the walkover? If you’re driving at the speed limit there is very little time to react coming around that corner. Considering this happened at night it is unlikely the driver saw her at all.
Everyone who has died closing that road, i am certain, has said the previous deceased was too careless and they can make it accross faster than that person.
It’s sad that a life was lost because of refusal to use the safe overpass.
How many lives must be lost before a safe and proper ‘TRAFFIC LIGHTS + ZEBRA CROSSING’ be placed at various points, for (1) the elderly (2) ones who are afraid of hights.
Traffic lights are the ones that are timed to go ‘ AMBER – RED – GREEN ‘
Sorry for the loss Relative and I do understand the strong feelings towards accusing drivers of negligence because you are in a state of mourning…I sympathize.
Now as a driver, it is extremely difficult to see a pedestrian at night (with oncoming headlights in your eyes) Ina zone where you are NOT expecting a pedestrian! That’s the scientific truth! To the living Bisee people who do the same, stop it!!!
On a different note Drivers need to stop parking on side walks and driving on sidewalks as well. They have no respect for pedestrian
Perhaps a traffic light should be placed there to allow pedestrians the opportunity to cross. In most countries, there will also be a delayed traffic light to allow individuals to cross, especially the handicapped and differently able. Godspeed.

I’m convinced lucians are dumb…this is a motor way/freeway flow of traffic should never be hindered tjats why there are two lanes on each side and walk overes erected in major spots…. nobody should be crossing the damn highway there is a median barrier for a reason… its very eveident why there is no gap in the mediam for people to pass throgh day bum dekdeks.

Some drivers can see pedestrians crossing and speed up deliberately this death could’ve been prevented.
