Allison Jean, the mother of murdered Saint Lucian Botham Jean, is expressing concern over the potential parole of her son’s killer.
Convicted murderer Amber Guyger will now be eligible for parole six years after the harrowing event.
On September 6, 2018, the former Dallas police officer entered Jean’s apartment, claiming he mistakenly believed it was her own, and fatally shot him.
Jean, who was in his own apartment at the time, was unarmed and posed no threat.
However, Guyger claimed she thought Jean was an intruder.
The tragic incident sparked widespread protests and outrage in Saint Lucia and the United States.
A court later sentenced Guyger to 10 years in prison following a hearing that went viral on social media.
The prospect of Guyger’s parole remains deeply unsettling for Botham’s mother.
She believes that if the convict serves less time than the period initially stipulated by the courts, it would be a denial of justice.
“The parole of Amber Guyger is one that is of concern to me. She is eligible, she became eligible yesterday, September 29, which was Botham’s 33rd birthday,” Allison Jean told St. Lucia Times.
“Having served five years, she’s now eligible for coming out after she got a sentence of 10 years. This, for us as a family, is going to be a very difficult thing because we know that the 10-year period which she was given was inadequate for the crime that she committed. And so we would like to see that she gets her full 10 years,” Jean added.
She solicited the assistance of the public to aid in this regard. She pointed to an ongoing petition and other avenues to help advance this cause. Â
“There is a petition going around that we’re asking everyone to sign based on how they feel,” she noted.
“There is also provision for people to write letters to the parole board so that when the hearing is done, they can make a determination on whether she gets parole or whether she remains in prison for the next 10 years….we have in excess of 600 signatures, but our goal is 1,000.”
