The West Indies began their 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a loss against South Africa at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday, October 4.
In the Group B encounter against the 2023 runners-up, the Maroon Warriors fell by ten wickets.
In the first innings, the Windies struggled during the powerplay, losing multiple top-order batters while managing to score only 31 runs.
The steady loss of additional wickets during the middle overs left the team in dire straits as they struggled to build partnerships.
A stabilizing innings from former captain Stafanie Taylor (44), along with supporting contributions from Shemaine Campbelle (17) and Saint Lucian Zaida James (15), helped the team reach 118-6 after their 20 overs, a below-par total for the venue.
South Africa started steadily in the powerplay, reaching 43 runs. A commanding opening partnership between Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits was all the team needed to secure a comprehensive victory within 18 overs.
Commenting on her team’s performance, Captain Hayley Matthews indicated that the result was certainly disappointing. She also commented on a nasty injury suffered by Zaida James, when she was struck by a ball off her own bowling.
“It was a very disappointing game and not the way we wanted to start,” she conceded. “We have to pick ourselves up quickly. We have a game in two days’ time and we have to bounce back quickly. We were able to build some partnerships in between but probably not able to strike the way we wanted to. [James] got hit on the face and hopefully that is just a cut.”
The team will hope for better fortunes when they face Scotland on Sunday.
