‘Prolonged’ Martinique Unrest Could Affect Saint Lucia Tourism

In recent weeks, violent protests over rising food prices have shaken the French Caribbean island of Martinique.

After a brief decrease in tensions on the island of 350,000 people, unrest erupted again earlier this month.

The new wave of trouble saw protesters looting shops, setting up burning barricades, and clashing with police.

In response to the escalating violence, authorities in Martinique announced plans to ban protests and implement a new curfew after the latest riots resulted in one fatality from gunfire, 26 injured officers, and significant property damage.

The unrest has caused alarm beyond the island, particularly for Saint Lucia.

Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) Chief Executive Officer Louis Lewis expressed concern over the potential ramifications of the ongoing situation in Martinique. “We have not been adversely affected, but if this is prolonged, it very well could impact us later on the road,” he noted.

Lewis highlighted the significance of Martinique as a critical market for Saint Lucia, especially for weekend visitors who frequent local entertainment venues and contribute to the economy through on-island spending. “We are monitoring the situation closely,” he stated, emphasising the importance of maintaining awareness as events unfold.

As of now, though Saint Lucia remains unaffected by the turmoil in Martinique the situation is evolving, and both the SLTA and the government are committed to staying vigilant to mitigate any future impacts on local tourism.
