Chastanet Calls For Stronger U.S.- Caribbean Ties

Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) leader Allen Chastanet has rejected attempts to compare him to Donald Trump, who swept to victory in Tuesday’s United States presidential election.

The UWP leader has also called for stronger ties between the Caribbean and the U.S.

According to Chastanet, significant differences exist between his and Trump’s policies, goals, and approaches.

Before delving in, Chastanet praised the U.S. electoral process this year, “There was a greater level of transparency…in protecting democracy. I think that they were very successful, and the people of America spoke.”

While supportive of democratic principles, he stressed that comparisons between himself and Trump are unfounded, highlighting that Saint Lucia and the U.S. face distinct challenges.

“I think it’s safe to say that both parties, the Democrats and Republicans, have not really, in my opinion, had a strong enough policy to support this region,” Chastanet stated.

He acknowledged the right of the U.S. to secure its borders but warned that tightening immigration controls could affect the Caribbean, especially Saint Lucia.

He said he hopes the Trump administration will increase its focus on Caribbean issues, especially by making U.S. visas more accessible, perhaps establishing a processing center in Saint Lucia to reduce travel expenses currently required to visit Barbados.

When asked directly about comparisons to Trump, Chastanet responded: “America and Saint Lucia are two very different places. So it’s impossible that our policies would be similar.”

He said his goal is to improve citizens’ quality of life and help the country compete better globally.

Addressing local issues, he again criticised the current government’s handling of inflation, citing the imposition of the 2.5% HCSL tax, which has compounded the rising cost of freight and goods, making them “even more expensive.”

“Myself and my party are working very hard to make sure that Saint Lucians are taken care of and that the country moves in the right direction.” Chastanet declared.
