Chastanet Proposes ‘Sectoral’ Minimum Wage

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet believes applying one minimum wage to everyone creates a problem. As a result, he has proposed a sectoral minimum wage.

The United Workers Party (UWP) leader observed that Saint Lucia has retail, agriculture, tourism, and commercial sectors.

“The minimum wage that you have to impose is for, maybe the retail sector, and maybe even for the agriculture sector. But that means that persons who are already obtaining a higher wage are not benefitting,” Chastanet explained.

During Thursday night’s Facebook-streamed opposition discussion on the cost of living, the former Prime Minister asserted that the minimum wage would not impact anyone earning $1, 100 monthly.

“That’s why we felt there should be a sectoral minimum wage which is much more difficult to implement but is necessary if you are now going to allow for a wholesale change,” Chastanet stated.

He also spoke of the need to convince business people that parallel to the policy of pushing for a minimum wage; the government must implement measures to ease the cost of doing business.

On October 1st, 2024, the long-anticipated national minimum wage took effect.

As per the new regulations, the minimum wage is  $6.52 per hour or $1131.00 monthly but does not include overtime pay, service charges, commissions, bonuses, or profit-sharing.

  5. Before I give my honest opinion about this, I need to be certain that the former prime minister knows the only definition for minimum wage for a country. This has nothing to do with sectors or whatever he mentioned. Clearly he doesn’t understand things as he has shown in many cases prior.
