Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has expressed concern over Saint Lucia’s homicide surge following last week’s fatal daylight shooting at Derek Walcott Square in Castries.
Images on social media shortly after the shooting showed two individuals on a motorcycle allegedly fleeing the scene.
“People are killing people in this country indiscriminately without fear of any concern. You ride on a motorbike into the square and shoot up people,” Chastanet stated.
A medical practitioner pronounced a man, whom police identified as Jahiem Papius of Babonneau, dead at the scene.
Another male was in critical condition after Monday’s shooting, which occurred at about 2:15 pm.
According to the Saint Lucia opposition leader, “a multitude of signs” existed before, indicating that crime was out of control.
However, Chastanet asserted that Monday’s incident at Derek Walcott Square ” took the cake”.
The United Workers Party (UWP) leader declared that Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, who is also responsible for national security, and the ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) had become a danger to Saint Lucia’s people.
The former Saint Lucia Prime Minister felt it was time for the people to hold the Labour administration accountable for a “multitude of injustices.”
Among the injustices Chastanet mentioned were issues regarding healthcare and crime.
In this regard, the UWP leader said last week’s fatal shooting in Castries should be a reminder to everyone there is no crime protection in the country.

Chastanet, please stop spewing garbage, you boasted how you would stop crime and under your watch it skyrocketed.
We are not gullible anymore, crime will stop when the gangsters say to themselves, they need to stop.
No government, no extreme measures put in place will stop whatever is happening.
I’m tired of you and your cohorts rubbish, you need to dump it at,Deglos.
This brazen act is nothing new. There have been many shootings in Castries in broad daylight over the years. This total disregard for law and order essentially started from the late nineties. This is what happens when the authorities keep ignoring the little infractions. It eventually grows into this mess. Take back the country, one offence at a time.
Mr. Chastanet, this killing has been in action a long time ago. You were there from 2016 to 2021, what did you do to alleviate this problem during your time? Why only now you believe you have all the solutions to these problems? All you politicians are disgusting. Now when you are having your town hall meetings, always tell us the new policies you plan to introduce if you get back in power.
Says the man under whose watch the country experienced the highest annual percentage increase in homicides in our entire history (2017). Baytiz!
