From Track to Triumph: Saint Lucian Giving Back to Young Athletes

A former collegiate athlete from Soufrière is empowering student-athletes in the United States through her 758 Summerthlete Programme.

Udoka Constantine, a former track and field athlete at Coppin State University where she competed for the Eagles, is dedicated to ensuring that the next generation of Saint Lucian student-athletes thrive academically and athletically.

Her programme brings athletes together after the academic year to celebrate their achievements and network as proud representatives of Saint Lucia, united by their shared passion for sports. It also emphasises the importance of giving back to the community.

“As young adults blessed with opportunities to study abroad and pursue our athletic dreams through scholarships, it’s our duty to use those blessings to uplift others,” Constantine said. “Fostering well-rounded personal growth through athletics is like uniting two worlds: professional development, representing their future careers, and personal growth, fueled by their emerging love for sports. Athletics instils discipline, teamwork, time management, and resilience—skills that extend far beyond sports.”

Reflecting on her personal journey, Constantine credits sports with paving the way for her to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and become a licensed registered nurse in the US—a dream she’s held since childhood.

“Growing up as a young girl in Saint Lucia, I dreamed of this moment, and sports played a significant role in making it a reality,” she said. “Together, we can empower young athletes and make a difference.”

The 758 Summerthlete Programme encourages student-athletes to maintain a balance between their education and athletic passions. “Spreading awareness is another crucial way to help. I encourage others to share my program on social media, in schools, and within communities to increase visibility and attract broader support,” the former athlete noted.

Approximately 10 past and present student-athletes attended the event, marking the official launch of the Summerthlete Programme in 2024. This initiative was designed to unite past and present athletes, allowing them to reminisce about their experiences representing the country and competing against one another during intercollegiate games, while also reflecting on their collegiate careers.

The four-day programme featured a range of activities. On day one, participants attended a poolside meet and greet, fostering connections among attendees. The following day, they enjoyed a traditional Saint Lucian Creole breakfast which was followed by fun sports activities.

Inclement weather prevented outdoor activities on day three, but a more relaxed atmosphere was achieved with board games that facilitated bonding.

Participants returned to their respective states on the fourth day, concluding a memorable Summerthlete experience.

The event fostered camaraderie and connection, leaving everyone excited for the 2025 Summerthlete Programme, which promises to be even more engaging and aligned with Constantine’s goals of developing athletes today and for the future.
