The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was unharmed after Israeli aircraft bombed the airport in Sana’a, Yemen, on Thursday.
The WHO said Tedros was in Yemen to negotiate the release of UN staffers who have been held hostage by the Houthi movement for several months. He also assessed the health and humanitarian situation in the country.
According to a WHO release, Tedros explained that with the mission concluded, he and his team were about to board their flight out of the country when the airport when the attack occurred.
As well as two reported deaths, a member of his plane’s crew was injured and the air traffic control tower and the departure lounge were both damaged.
“Tedros and his team were just metres away but are unharmed,” the WHO release stated.
The strike is reportedly one of two that took place in Houthi-led Sana’a on Thursday, with the second hitting the Ras Issa port, killing one person.
On behalf of the WHO, Tedros sent his condolences to the families whose loved ones lost their lives in the attack.
The BBC reported that the Israeli military launched a series of air strikes on Yemen, hitting “military targets” held by the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group.
Israel said it launched the strikes because of repeated Houthis attacks.
