Internationally renowned poet and lecturer Ishion Hutchinson will deliver this year’s Sir Derek Walcott Memorial Lecture, a tribute to the life and literary legacy of one of Saint Lucia’s most celebrated icons and winner of a Nobel Prize in Literature.
Hutchinson’s lecture, titled Portrait of the Prodigal in Autumn, will be delivered at the Finance Administrative Centre, Seraphine, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Hutchinson, celebrated for his profound lyrical works and exploration of cultural and historical themes, has earned global acclaim. In his lecture, he will explore the theme of autumn; a recurring motif in Walcott’s poetry. Symbolising connections and separations from cultural identity, autumn in Walcott’s work embodies grief, loss, and the complexities of human emotion. Hutchinson will offer a fresh interpretation of this symbolic season, delving into its metaphorical richness and relevance in Walcott’s oeuvre.
Combining critical analysis with personal stories of his encounters with Walcott, both in the Caribbean and abroad, Hutchinson’s presentation promises an intimate and profound reflection on the Nobel Laureate’s imagination and artistry.
The Sir Derek Walcott Memorial Lecture remains a cornerstone of the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) programming, celebrating Walcott’s enduring impact on global literature and the arts.
