Denver Gets Double Bronze at Labejof

The island’s top junior cyclist competed at the weekend in Martinique, one of two Saint Lucians contesting the Mémorial Labéjof & Denise. Denver Alphonse took two third places in the event, organised by Pedal-Pilotine of Rivière-Pilote.

Alphonse left the island last Wednesday morning along with Gillan Moses to participate in the 10-kilometre individual time trial on Saturday, and a 130km road race on Sunday. The Saint Lucian riders have remained in Martinique for a few days, to continue training alongside members of Karaibe Culture Sport.

In the road race, the 17-year-old from La Caye, Dennery, finished in 4:01:33, 13th overall, and third in the Under-19 division, which included 17 young men. Out of 48 starters, only 28 finished the gruelling course.

Ninth overall, Lois Jean Baptiste ended in 3:56:36 as the top junior athlete. Néhémy Jean Baptiste, 11th overall, was the second Under-19 rider across the line in 3:56:41. Stefan Bennett of JC231 won the road race in 3:38:03, 56 seconds ahead of Gert Kivistik. Laurent Néror punched in at 3:39:45 for third.

Alphonse was also third in the time trial in 20:59, good for third in his division.

The event is named after iconic cyclist Charles Labéjof and former Pedal-Pilotine president Serge Denise.
