Charlery, Defreitas Promoted to Assistant Commissioners of Police

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has promoted two senior officers to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). Luke Defreitas and Albert Charlery were elevated to the positions earlier this week, recognising their years of dedication and leadership within the force.

In an interview with the St Lucia Times, ACP Defreitas expressed gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career.

“Though it is a significant personal achievement for me, I think it signifies a lot more,” he said. “At my level, without the support of the persons I supervise and work alongside, promotions like this are not easy.”

Defreitas credited colleagues across all ranks, including Commissioner of Police Vern Garde, for their role in his success. He also emphasised the importance of public cooperation in combating crime, noting ongoing challenges such as the 14 homicides recorded this year – some still under investigation – as well as road safety concerns, with several fatalities already reported in 2025.

“We are seeing some progress,” Defreitas added, “and we continue to ask the public to work with us in partnership to make Saint Lucia a safer jurisdiction for everybody.”

ACP Charlery described his promotion as a proud moment, thanking his family, the public and fellow officers. “I want to say thank you to my wife, my daughter, members of the public, and the police officers who show up daily to serve and protect,” he said.

Charlery reaffirmed his commitment to public safety, acknowledging past challenges in mobility and resources but stressing that morale among officers remains high. “We’re very concerned about ensuring the people remain safe throughout the length and breadth of this country,” he said.

These promotions reflect the ongoing strengthening of leadership within the police force as reducing crime and enhancing public safety remain top priorities.
